Spices are great for adding more “oomph” to any meal. Spices are also known to prevent some diseases and illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and high cholesterol. All you have to know is which spices to add to each foods, and you will be able to enjoy any meal.

Cinnamon is one my favorite spices. It prevents diabetes by levelling blood sugars after you have eaten. It also prevent high cholesterol by immediately making the good cholesterol (HDL) increase. Cinnamon is great for eating with toast, or eating with some cereal and Cheerios. Even some supposed “junk foods” could have cinnamon added, such as oatmeal raisin cookies, or even pancakes and waffles. After dinner, I even take some spoonfuls of cinnamon so I know I will be healthy all Continue Reading

Resvinatrol Fights Type 2 Diabetes

Resveratrol is not new, scientists have been studying its effects for many years. Resveratrol is known for its ability to protect plants from bacteria and fungi, while previous research has also found it helps prevent the negative effects of high-calorie diets and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer potential. As a cancer preventer, resveratrol is most effective in studies when it comes in direct contact with the cancer, such as skin cancer or gastrointestinal tumors. If you do drink, switching to red wine might be a healthier option than other forms of alcohol, but if you don’t drink, resveratrol is not a reason to start.

DIET FOR SMOKERS AND EX-SMOKERS

As a dietitian, the three most common questions which smokers ask me about diet and smoking, are: (1) Can a diet compensate for health damage caused by smoking? (2) What should I eat if I smoke? (3) If I quit, what type of diet is best to prevent weight gain?

(1) CAN A DIET COMPENSATE FOR SMOKING?

No diet or eating-plan, no matter how nutritious, can neutralise the health damage caused by the 850+ chemicals in tobacco smoke – many of which are carcinogenic. On average, if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day, you double your risk of a heart-attack and are five times more likely to suffer a stroke than a non-smoker. At 40 cigarettes a day, you are five times more likely to suffer from sudden cardiac death. Smoking is also the leading cause of lung cancer.
