Cervical cancer is a cancer which forms in the tissues of the cervix. It can be a slow-growing cancer many women don’t realize they have, because symptoms might not be apparent. Having a regular Pap tests can led to early detection. As a cervical cancer surviver I can attest to the need for early pap test.

Human papillomavirus is a virus that manifest itself as abnormal tissue growth, (i.e. genital wart) or other changes that happen in cells which can lead to cervical cancer. As women, especially those who’ve been involved in sexual relationships have at one time had some form of HPV. We just never knew because nothing ever came of it.

What every woman should know about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) – Part 3

The cervix is the base of the uterus which opens into the top of the vagina. Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women, mostly affecting those between the ages of 35 and 55, but also young women who are sexually active. It is now believed that a virus, (human papillomavirus) which can be transmitted during sexual intercourse, is responsible for most cases of cervical cancer and there are vaccines available which offer protection to two strains of the virus which cause around 70% of these.

Research has shown that the risk of developing cervical cancer decreases if sexual activity starts at a later age and increases with more sexual partners. Using a condom offers some, but not complete protection from the cancer causing virus.
